Teesta solar plant changes Latshal Char in Rangpur

The development of the Teesta solar facility by the most prominent and largest conglomerate in the country Beximco Group has changed the dynamics of Latshal Char, which is a secluded sandbank nestled along the Teesta River. Situated approximately 40 kilometers distant from the urban expanse of Rangpur, this locale once harbored a starkly contrasting narrative.

Only half a decade ago, Latshal Char area was ensconced by water during the monsoons and transitioned into a desolate expanse of pale sands in the summer. Sparse patches of vegetation sporadically emerged, catering to the grazing needs of local livestock. Owing to the absence of infrastructure and inhabitable conditions, human presence within the vicinity remained scarce.

Thanks to the Teesta solar facility project, the landscape has undergone a profound transformation. Beximco has reaped remarkable dividends with the inception of the nation's largest solar endeavor, christened Teesta Solar Limited. With an initial electrical output capacity of 200 megawatts contingent upon solar irradiance, the facility experiences a concomitant rise in energy generation with heightened solar exposure. To date, the solar plant has contributed 42.31 crore units of electricity to the national grid.

The inauguration of the solar power plant by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 2 August 2023 marked a significant milestone, with power transmission commencing on a trial basis in January of the same year. The generated electricity from the Teesta solar facility is distributed to various districts, including Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat, situated within the northern precincts. Consequently, the incidence of power outages has witnessed a perceptible decline within these regions.

An estimated populace of nearly one million individuals residing in these vicinities has reaped the benefits, fostering growth across sectors encompassing commerce, industry, and agriculture, as attested by an official spokesperson.

Initiated in 2017, Beximco embarked on the construction of the solar plant sprawled across over 600 acres of land spanning three northern districts that includes Gaibandha, and Kurigram. The project's investment encompassed a spectrum of endeavors, including riverbank fortification, roadway establishment, land acquisition, photovoltaic panel installation, and transmission line construction linking transformers to national grid. The solar power plant boasts the installation of approximately 550,000 solar panels, complemented by 85 mounting pylons. Electricity generation is facilitated through 120 inverters interconnected with said solar panels, subsequently channelling power to the national grid via 132kV transmission lines.

The economic landscape within the vicinity has experienced a surge, with burgeoning activities in commerce and productivity. Local denizens have noted a substantial escalation in land valuations within the surrounding areas.
